“When I sit at my Steinway, I'm constantly aware of the incredible human craftsmanship that it embodies. To me, it is a constant source of wonder how human hands can create an instrument that responds so subtly to one's touch. At some point in my playing, all barriers between my intention and the resulting sound appear to vanish. At times, my Steinway almost seems to anticipate my wishes. I realize that those who do not play may consider this mystical sentimentality. But those who have played on such an instrument will recognize the truth of this image. For such a companion in music one can only experience a sense of endless gratitude.”
